3D Wayfinder Turns 20: Our Journey and What’s Next

October 16, 2026

20 years. More than 30 countries. Countless journeys. And we’re just getting started.

Twenty years ago, we started with an idea: what if finding your way through a large building could be simple, intuitive, and even enjoyable? Back in 2006, digital indoor navigation was still a relatively new concept. Buildings were becoming bigger, public spaces more complex, and people increasingly needed better ways to find their destinations. We saw an opportunity to create something different — a solution that would bring buildings to life through interactive 3D technology. What began as an ambitious idea in Estonia has grown into an international wayfinding platform used in more than 30 countries around the world.

Today, in 2026, 3D Wayfinder Turns 20! What started as an ambitious idea in Estonia has grown into an international wayfinding platform used in more than 30 countries around the world.

And while we’re incredibly proud of how far we’ve come, we’re even more excited about what lies ahead.

From a Small Estonian Team to the Global Stage

Our journey has never been about becoming the biggest company. It has always been about building great technology, solving real problems, and creating something we can genuinely be proud of.

One thing that makes our story special is that our technology has been developed entirely in-house. From the very beginning, we have invested in our own people, our own ideas, and our own technical expertise. Since 2012, this has also included developing our own WebGL rendering engine, FRAK, which became an important part of our technological foundation.

Over the years, our team has grown, our platform has evolved, and the projects have become increasingly ambitious. Yet our approach remains the same: we believe in knowing our product inside and out, being flexible, and finding solutions even when the challenges seem complicated.

Today, we’re proud to stand alongside much larger international technology providers and compete for projects on a global scale.

As 3D Wayfinder turns 20, we’re especially proud of how far our small Estonian team has come. With all our technology developed in-house, we’ve grown into a global competitor, proving that innovation doesn’t depend on the size of a company. For us, that’s one of the greatest achievements of these twenty years. It proves that a dedicated team from a small country can build technology that makes a difference around the world.

From Small Museums and Shopping Malls to Major International Airports

The beauty of wayfinding is that every building has its own story, its own challenges, and its own visitors. Over the past two decades, we have had the opportunity to work with an incredible variety of locations — from smaller museums and malls to enormous shopping centers, hospitals, transportation hubs, and international airports.

Our solutions have helped visitors explore shopping centres, students navigate university campuses, patients find the right departments in hospitals, and travellers make their way through busy terminals.
Some projects have taken us to remarkable places, including the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, major shopping destinations in the Middle East, and unique visitor attractions such as the Piusa Caves in Estonia.
Every project has taught us something new. A museum might need a beautifully detailed interactive map that helps visitors discover exhibitions. An airport might require a sophisticated navigation platform capable of handling thousands of destinations and complex passenger journeys. A hospital needs clarity, accessibility, and reliability at moments when visitors may already feel overwhelmed. Despite their differences, all these projects share one purpose: helping people feel more confident in unfamiliar spaces. And that’s what continues to motivate us.

Celebrating 20 Years With Something New: Our Pre-Made Templates

Six designs. Different personalities. One shared purpose.

A birthday is a wonderful reason to look back, but we also wanted to celebrate by bringing something new to our customers.

We’re excited to introduce our refreshed collection of six pre-made 3D Wayfinder design templates, created to make professional indoor navigation more accessible, easier to implement, and more affordable. And the best part? Customers who choose one of our existing pre-made templates don’t have to pay additional template development costs.

These designs provide a ready-made starting point for a beautiful and functional wayfinding interface. Colours, icons, and symbols can be adapted to match a customer’s brand, while more extensive customisations can be discussed separately.

Inspired by the Lighthouses of Estonia We wanted our new templates to have a story of their own. And what could be more fitting for a wayfinding company than lighthouses? For generations, lighthouses have helped travellers find their way safely through unfamiliar waters. Today, our technology does something similar inside buildings.

That’s why five of our six templates are named after beautiful Estonian lighthouses.

Vilsandi

Vilsandi does not divide the land into fragments. It stands on the open shore and points the way. This template does not begin with a list. It begins with space. A large central anchor creates balance. Movement emerges around it. The user does not browse categories. They move through space.

Kihnu

Kihnu is not a large island, yet it possesses a strong character. It does not sprawl. Instead, it is compact and layered. The same logic applies to this template. Navigation does not begin with a map. It starts with a choice. Each category is like a distinct area – clear, distinguishable, and logically positioned. The Kihnu template ensures the user does not get lost, guiding them step by step.

Tahkuna

Tahkuna is a vertical, brand-centric navigation model. Like the Tahkuna Lighthouse, this template is clear, direct, and highly visible from a distance. It prioritizes the message over the structure. The campaign area at the top creates an emotional impact and establishes a focal point, while the alphabetical list below ensures quick, logical access to brands. Tahkuna is well-suited for centers where brand visibility, campaigns, and clear name-based search are key priorities.

Letipea

Letipea is like an old lighthouse that needs no unnecessary frills. It stands firm and does its job—visibly, yet quietly. The template’s structure follows a similar pattern: a classic layout, a clear rhythm, and a logical division of zones.

Ristna

Ristna is a navigation model inspired by historical architecture. Like the Ristna Lighthouse, this template features a robust structure and clear articulation. It relies on symmetry, rhythm, and logical division. The structure takes center stage. The user moves as if through a station—along an axis, from stop to stop.

Default

Our original template, the starting point of our design journey, which continues to offer a familiar and functional 3D navigation experience.

20 Years Behind Us. The Best Is Still Ahead.

As 3D Wayfinder turns 20, we look back with gratitude at the people, partnerships, and projects that have shaped our journey. But even more importantly, we look ahead with new ideas, ambitious plans, and the same passion for innovation that started it all.

But when we look back, it’s not just the technology that stands out.

It’s the people.

The colleagues who have spent years turning ambitious ideas into working solutions. The partners who have introduced 3D Wayfinder to new countries and markets. The customers who have trusted us with their buildings and challenged us to create something better. It’s the late nights spent solving complicated problems, the excitement of seeing a new project go live, the lessons learned along the way, and the satisfaction of knowing that something we created is helping someone, somewhere, find their way. We have grown, changed, and learned an enormous amount over these two decades. But the curiosity and determination that started this journey are still very much alive. And our ambitions certainly haven’t become smaller.

We want to bring 3D Wayfinder to even more countries, make our technology more accessible, develop smarter tools, and continue proving that a dedicated Estonian team can compete with the world’s biggest players.

Twenty years ago, we started by helping people find their way through buildings. Along the way, we found our own path too.

And we’re nowhere near the end of it.

To everyone who has been part of our journey, whether for twenty years or just a few weeks: thank you.
Thank you for your trust, your ideas, your challenges, your cooperation, and your belief in what we do.

Here’s to twenty years of 3D Wayfinder — and to the exciting journey ahead!

With gratitude,
The 3D Wayfinder Team
